Carrara and its Marble Caves

The guided tours run along this path, an extraordinary trip over the “Ponti di Vara”, going through suggestive tunnels dug into the rock on the discovery of caves from which the white marble of Carrara was extracted since the Pre Romanesque period. The renowned Polvaccio’s Caves, where possibly the most famous around the world white marble sculptures such as the David of Michelangelo, the “Mosè” or the “Pietà”, alongside numerous other works of art, come from. The unforgettable and unique tour of the three marble basins of the “Torano”, “Fantiscritti” and “Colonnata” caves runs along steep quarry roads used for marble transport. In particular, outside the “Fantascritti Cave” it’s customary to pay a visit to the small museum of the public marble in the same little square and purchase 100% marble souvenir. On the way to the caves there are also many “larderie” with their famous white marble basins.
